Question

I accidentally put my card number instead of my account number on the tax returns and was wondering if I could fix it or what would happen.

If you have not already filed your return or if it is in a reject status follow the instructions below to change your bank account number. If your return is rejected you have the opportunity to make any change necessary before sending the return back through e-file.

To access or change your banking information in TurboTax Online you would go to the File section:

  • Select File in the upper right of the screen
  • Select  the "Revisit" button next to "Your Refund Info"
  • Answer the interview questions
  • You will arrive at a screen asking for your bank account information

If your return has already been filed and accepted by the IRS, they do not allow any changes to the bank account for deposit of your refund.  They will process the original request and then convert it to a paper check mailed to your address on the return.  This does take additional time for the IRS to process once the refund is sent back to them.

You could contact your bank to see if they have the capability to flag it with your card number.

From what you've written down since 2019, my file has already been accepted by the IRS, so I still receive my money via check, and they will send it directly to my address, right? Or I can do something else other than that to change from my card number to my account number?

That is correct. The direct deposit will be returned to the IRS, and they will instead issue a paper check to your last known address, which is the address on your tax return.
