Box 12 problem

Fyi, I’ve waited weeks for the box 12 problem to be fixed. It kept telling me “the amount you entered can’t be greater than the one in the box” which it wasn’t. I was told twice, it was nothing on my end; that turbo tax was still trying to fix the issue. I finally talked to someone on Friday who had me round DOWN the amount to the nearest dollar. For instance, my amount was $1,936.23 so I entered $1,936.00. And it immediately submitted my return. Hope this helps!

Here are some steps that may help you move forward to remove the error.

  1. Remove the cents on the screen Tell us more about your retirement contributions (this should remove the error message)
  2. Also, if you remove the cents in the box on the screen  Check this Entry, the error message goes away. The same result occurs if the cents are removed on the line  Box 12 S: on the   Check this Entry screen.
  3. Finally, the error is removed when a re-type of the exact number, including the cents, in either of those places.

Another thing to consider is that whether you may have entered that you have a Simple Roth IRA, when they actually just have a regular Simple IRA, in which case the answer to Tell us more about your retirement contributions would be ZERO.

Round numbers can be used and it will not affect your return.  This was tested.
