Qualified Dependent

My single daughter is a 27 year old medical student living away in own apartment (0 months living at home)  Earned income less than $4,700 and all living expenses paid for by me (father).    All US citizens.

0 is entered in Number of Months Living At  Home and software indicates she qualifies as a dependent.   Is this accurate?    When I went back to review 0 months was changed to 6 months.

Your daughter cannot be claimed as a qualifying child, but she can be claimed as a qualifying relative as long as she meets these requirements:

    • Income is less than $4,700
    • Parent's provided over half of her support
    • Not filing a joint tax return if married unless filing to claim a refund of withholding
    • Must be a U.S. citizen, U.S. resident, U.S. national, or resident of Canada and Mexico
    • Parent(s) isn't a dependent on someone else's tax return

Your daughter doesn't have to live with you to qualify as your qualifying relative.

She is your dependent. As your daughter she doesn’t have to live with you to be a qualifying relative. Since you provided more than half of her support and she had less than $4,000 income she meets all of the criteria.
