Question

1099-INT tax exempt interest in multiple states

I have selected interested from multiple states and entered all the states with their correct portion of taxes. It matches line 8 which TT displays.  When  I press continue it highlight the amount in the first row only which is Arizona and the amount it the correct allocation. It gives the error “amount of interest for state needs to be adjusted to fully allocate the amount of Box 8 interest. State allocation total should be equal to Box 8 - tax exempt interest total.

this would be true if I had selected one state. But I selected multiple states. It will not allow me to continue until the form is corrected - but as far as I understand it, it is correct.

I appreciate any help as the support desk just said delete cookies and cache, which I did before calling and have done again as requested which causes the data to be lost and need to be reentered.

All suggestions are very welcome. Thank you!

You may not need all of those states.

    • The interest income is only allocated to your resident state.
    • If you haven't moved it will only be allocated to the state where you live.
    • You can remove all of those other states.

Yes, that is correct.  It only matters where you lived during the year.  You will include the income for your resident state and any states you may have lived during the year.
