IRS will waive underpayment penalty if I explain I was impacted by a national disaster (hurricane Milton)?

If you live in a federally declared disaster area and met the special filing and payment deadlines for that disaster, you qualify for an automatic underpayment penalty waiver. Even if the penalty is calculated on the return, the IRS should not charge the penalty.

    Enter Casualty Loss:

    1. Open your return (if not already open).
    2. Enter "casualty loss" in the Search box.
    3. Click on "jump to casualty" link.
    4. Answer Yes to "Did you have anything damaged or stolen during a recent federal disaster?"
    5. Enter your hurricane-related information as you proceed through the program.
