Question

if i received money for taking care of a child but didnt do it for profit but to help. where do i enter that info? i was told line 21 of 1040

    The only way you could report it as other income would be if you don't provide similar services to others, you didn't provide the service in prior or future years and you didn't have a profit motive.  

     

    From what you describe, the IRS could consider the income as self-employment income, since you are providing a service for money.

     

    To report the income as other income, follow these steps:

     

    1. From the Federal menu in TurboTax find Wages and Income 

    2. Find Less Common Income

    3. Choose Miscellaneous Income, 1099-A, 1099-C

    4. Choose Other Reportable Income

    5. Enter a description of the income and the amount on the screen that says Other Taxable Income

     

    To report the income as self-employment income, work through that section in the Wages and Income area of TurboTax.

    The "line 21" was from the year 2017 and earlier.  Are you sure you want to be using tax advice from someone that is referring to 7+ year old forms?
