our tax exempt amount on line 12 of 1099 div is charging us tax. What's going on with it?

    The federal should show full dividends on 3a but only the taxable amount on 3b. Follow these steps:

    1. Return to the form. 
    2. Verify your entries. 
    3. After you enter the information on the form, you have to answer the questions following the entry. 
    4. Please review your answers to the questions.
    5. Verify your 1040 line 3 entries are correct.

    Instructions for 1099-DIV states:

    Box 12. Exempt-Interest Dividends

    Enter exempt-interest dividends from a mutual fund or other RIC. Include specified private activity bond interest dividends in box 13 and in the total for box 12. See the instructions for box 13 next.
