Question

Where do I find the info to put in the "State Employer ID" (box 6) of the 1099-NEC? I'm a self-employed sole prop in California. Is this a box necessary to fill-in?

The State Employer ID can be the same as the federal ID if your business is not enrolled with the state and a state number was not issued to you. Or you can choose to leave it blank.

Business entity filing is not necessary for sole proprietors, but if you intend to form a corporation, limited liability company or partnership, you must file with the California Secretary of State (SOS).

Thank you very much for the quick response. I'm a sole proprietor. In TurboTax then, do I need to complete the "State income and taxes withheld" portion of the 1099-NEC at all? I just selected California from the dropdown

as shown here. However, the State Income, State Employer ID, and Amount of state taxes withheld are all "0" in my case.
