Question

Do I file as a non-resident or resident (no choice of part-year) on a W4? I moved from California to Virginia on August 28th 2024.

I flew to Virginia on August 18th 2024 with the intent of only visiting but made the decision on the last day of my trip (August 28th 2024) to stay and live with my boyfriend. I've been applying to job since then and got an offer. I'm currently doing the onboarding process and have to fill out a W4. If I put my boyfriends address it shows up at "Virginia Resident" if I put my California address it shows as "California Resident, Virginia Nonresident" it doesn't give me an option to put both, there's only a space that says address 2 and when i put my boyfriends address in address 2 it combines my California address and his Virginia address but still shows up as "Virginia Resident" or "California Resident, Virginia Nonresident" depending on which address I put in the first  address slot.

If you are completing paperwork for a job you will have that entails living and working in VA, then you need to use your VA address.   If you lived and worked for part of the year in CA, and then you live and work for part of the year in VA, at tax time you will have two state returns to prepare.  Each of them will be part-year returns for the states you lived and worked in.  As for federal tax---you will use the address where you want to receive mail and/or a check from the IRS.

@AmG50on the W-4, you want to use the VA address as your earnings are taxable in VA (and not CA).  That way your employer will withhold VA tax on your paycheck.

On the Federal W-4 all you have to do is check SINGLE in STEP 1.  nothing else to do.

You are a VA resident.
