Where do you see this?  Did you get a letter?

It may mean that you have been assessed penalties or fees for some reason by the IRS or state.

If you are checking the status of your return, and see this, then you may receive a letter from the IRS explaining what is happening.

Can you clarify the reason for your concern?

Once your return has been accepted, TurboTax gets no information on the status of your return or the date of your refund. To check if your return was accepted, sign in to your TurboTax account and open Your tax returns & documents on the Tax Home screen. Your return for 2023 should be listed as Filed, and your Return Status should say Accepted

After you confirm your return was accepted, you can check your refund status on the IRS website Where's My Refund? for more information on your return.

Per the IRS, some tax returns take longer to process than others for many reasons, including when a return:

  • Is sent by mail
  • Contains errors or is incomplete
  • Needs further review in general
  • Is affected by identity theft or fraud
  • Was referred to the IRS by the bank due to suspicious activity
  • Includes a claim filed for an Earned Income Tax Credit or an Additional Child Tax Credit. See Q&A below.
  • Includes a Form 8379, Injured Spouse AllocationPDF, which could take up to 14 weeks to process
